Well, what a day...! Nearly a re-run of the weather at the previous Sywell show, with early rain giving way to better weather. Thankfully the rain was much less heavy than in 2006 so the ground was not as affected. Unfortunately we had a rather less photogenic backdrop for you all with work on the new all-weather runway meaning that a concrete plant and various vehicles were sat on the far side of the airfield but hiding them elsewhere for the show wasn't feasible. We also lost the Vulcan as you all know, and the DC-6 also cancelled on us, not sure of the reason yet. We had hoped to get the Me-208 down from Scotland to fill in for the Me-108 we lost due to its belly landing last week but sadly the weather conspired against us there and both the 208 and the Mew Gull could not get down from ooop North to be with us.

Anyway on with the pics! Starting off with the whole reason for the show - the Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance - seen here departing Sywell to do its stuff:

Then on with the WW1 sequence...

Anybody we know...?

First time I've seen the Silence Twister tacked on to the Swift glider team - an unusual combo which I think works well.

Lovely to see the Vampire in sun shine at last albeit somewhat briefly!

Another thunderous Mustang display from Alister Kay!

Barnstorming madness from Dennis Neville & Co...

My personal highlight of the visiting aircraft, the Optica!

Martin Lovell's MD-500 routine is also watchable and I love the 'excited puppy' dance he makes it do once he's picked up the cone and put it somewhere else!

An outstanding display from the Catalina boys.

P-2 getting airborne towards threatening skies. Thankfully they just blocked out the sun and didn't give us any more rain!

I was a bit busy with other duties from this point on but grabbed a few piccies on the way...

All in all I thought it was a great day (though I'm obviously biased!) and early indications are we'll be able to make a substantial donation to the air ambulance, which is what it's all about after all.

Thanks to Martin for the helo ride and my other half for putting up with "bad tempered stressed harassed bloke" all day...!

Those WW1 display photos are simply stunning.

Well done to all at Sywell for making it possible. Particularly this one!

Those WW1 shots are, well, perfect! Especially like the Sopwith Pup. Must have been one of the few UK based planetalkers not there, was down in Kent playing with one of the Flyboy's static Nieuports, with another about 50 metres away

Damien - Absolutely great WW1 photos. And the Harvard shot brings back lots of good RCAF memories. Beautiful!!! I can just hear the howl of the engine & prop!! A sound unlike any other aircraft.

I especially like seeing aerial pictures of airshows and these are just great, the kind of photographs that become more interesting as the years pass by. All the images are technically and creatively spot on (as we've come to expect from Damien). Thanks for sharing.

A very nice set of shots Damien, especially the different angle on the WW1 display.

I'm pleased that it was a successful show at Sywell this year, in spite of the 'no-shows' from the Vulcan and DC-6. It was one of my favourite shows of 2006, and I look forward to a repeat performance in 2010!

Great to see an Optica out and about again. What's the story with this example?

Thanks Mike. The story is that John Edgeley has reacquired the design rights and wants to relaunch the type - G-BOPO is the first of two airframes to be returned to the air.

We were thinking of going to Sywell but decided not to due to the weather. With hindsight, wrong and I'm sorry to have missed it.

I've got so used to p*ssing down being the norm over the last couple of years it's a bit of a surprise when it isn't.
